Winter Wonderland

Through the Wardrobe | By Leanne Broadbent
Here is one of my latest images which I thought was very appropriate for this festive season. It is based on the classic tale by C.S. Lewis 'The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe'. The scene is set when the children emerge from the wardrobe and into Narnia!

I would also just like to add that I wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year for 2012!

Showing at Back O' the Shop Gallery

Lucy Explores Snow | Leanne Broadbent | 2011

From Sunday 6th November this new art work amongst others will be exhibited in 'Selection Box 2011' at the Back o' the Shop Gallery (Terrington).

It was inspired by C. S. Lewis's fantasy fiction 'The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe' one of my all-time favourite children's books and is a scene when Lucy first steps outside of the wardrobe into the land of Narnia and finds trees and snow where there should only be the back of  the wardrobe!

Other pieces in this exhibition are also inspired by this story including 'Edmund' and 'Lucy's Invitation to Tea'.

Meanwhile if you cannot make it to see this exhibition a selection of my art works will also be on display from November at Gallery Forty-Nine (Bridlington) included in an affordable art section in time for Christmas purchases!

Auction for Charity

The charity event held on Friday night for the Royal Mission of Deep Sea Fishermen was a huge success with the charity making around £900.00 for the cause.

My Limited Edition Print 'Tom' fetched a very good price as well and I am very pleased that the money will now go to such a worthy cause.

Donation to The Royal Mission of Deep Sea Fishermen

Today I donated a Limited Edition Print to The Royal Mission of Deep Sea Fishermen to be auctioned in an event held on Friday 19th August at the Bridlington Rugby Union Football Club at 8pm.
I was very happy to donate to this charity as my grandfather was a fisherman and part of the lifeboat crew. The picture itself named ‘Tom’ was influenced by Charles Kingsley’s novel ‘The Waterbabies’ and includes a picture I sketched of my grandfather as a child making it a poignant picture to produce, so therefore I thought of no better image to donate to this particular charity.

The Mission was founded in 1881 to combat dreadful conditions being suffered by the fishermen in the North Sea. It is the only charity that is dedicated to fishermen and has changed alongside the fishing industry but throughout the years of change, it has continued to work with fishermen and their families.
In recent years it has moved away from providing quayside accommodation for fishermen and now its main role is one of welfare. The mission, as a Christian organisation, look after all fishermen irrespective of their race or belief.
Mike Smith Organiser Said:
“Like so many charities we receive no help from Government and are reliant on the generosity of the general public. That is why events like this are important, not only to raise money but to make people aware of the Missions existence.”
I just hope the event is a big success and the Limited Edition Print raises them some money to go to such a worthy charity. Tickets are £7.50 and include food, 50’s& 60’s music with musician Steve Taylor, and the auction all in aid of the Royal National Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen.

Sir Peter Blake

Yesterday I attended the preview of   one of my favourite artists of all time - Sir Peter Blake (Born 1932) familiarly known as the Grandfather of British Pop and legend to all young aspiring artists. I was lucky enough to attend a lecture given by him when I was at university and afterwards he dutifully sat whilst an enormous queue of students waited for his signature.

Viewing his works again I became deeply inspired and found parallels with my own work. Satirically mocking my need to be autonomous with my work I find that he as well as David Hockney (another favourite) both created works themed on children’s literature, Peter Blake being inspired by Lewis Carroll (early 1970’s) and David Hockney by the Brothers Grimm fairy tales(1969). However my work is substantially different to their own take on the works but I somehow feel my creations to date are like a rite of passage for the young creative mind.

This edges me to go forth and create so that one day perhaps a young artist will esteem me in such a godlike fashion!

“Creativity takes Courage” Henri Matisse (1869-1954)

When Henri Matisse spoke these words I am sure they came from the heart. He would of personally felt this when he exhibited Woman with a Hat (1905) at the Salon gaining the comment “A pot of paint has been flung in the face of the public” from the critic Camille Mauclair. Comments like that can crush an artist in one little sweep and make us question ourselves  ‘What on earth are we doing?’, which is not good for creativity. Nevertheless, some will say we deserve it for exhibiting it in the first place!

Creating art work is a deeply personal act and I sometimes feel like a piece of me is extracted when I create an image, so when you produce an exhibition of new work it is really like putting your heart on your sleeve for the audience to make of it what they will (as you may be able to tell I am suffering from Pre-exhibition/preview jitters).

However, at the end of the day these comments sting and all an artist really wishes for is recognition but when that is achieved – we just want to rebel!

Tiny Steps

These are my first steps into the mystery world of blogging!
I am actually feeling nervous because unlike other ways to connect with an audience such as a website (www.leannebroadbent.com) this is going to be personal. It is a true look into my creative thinking – a very scary thought!
